Our history of Los Olivos opens in 1861 with the establishment of the Overland/ Coast Line Stage Station at Ballards, just south of present Los Olivos (The Ballard Adobes, Santa Barbara County Landmark #20) The stage ran from San Francisco through Los Olivos, south to Los Angeles then to San Diego.

In 1887 Felix Mattei, anticipating the arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway, opened a hotel to accommodate rail and stage passengers making north and south connections in Los Olivos. Streets were leveled by Chinese workers, and following the first whistle of the engine in November, 1887, land auctions were held.
